The vineyard lodges are intimately linked to the life of the vineyard. They are the concrete proof of a way of life that has now disappeared. Limeray’s vineyard lodges are from the 19th century. They were built on the edge of the roads or at the crossroads of two roads.
There are 5 of them, one of which is very dilapidated. The lodges in Limeray have no standard plan, they are all different. However, they all have a rectangular shape on one or two levels.
Lodges were important during the Second World War. The resistance fighters hid weapons there. Moreover, in the middle of the war, columns of three to four hundred prisoners marched to the prison camp at Amboise. Some prisoners managed to dive into a ditch and then went to a lodge where they could change. Dressed as peasants, they crossed the line of demarcation without attracting attention.
