According to the municipal council register, the Jeu de Paume building belongs to the abbey of Fontaine les Blanches (Autrèche). It was used as a place to play paume, a very popular game under the Ancien Régime(i.e. former regime). It was sold as national property during the Revolution. The building was then converted into a house.
Today, what is called the “Jeu de Paume” (Palm tennis) is a flat field at the end of the Street of the same name, between the top of the hill and the bottom of the village. It was demolished in the late 1950s to leave space for a newer building. The stones were similar to those of the Old Courthouse of the rue d’Enfer. There was also a basement.
The Jeu de Paume was a very popular game in the late Middle Ages and Modern times. A ball, called “éteuf”, was struck first with the palm of the hand, then later with a kind of racket.
