Musée de la Vieille poste Version anglaise

The former post office is more commonly known as the « Musée de la Vieille Poste » (the « Old Post Office Museum »). The building is located at the eastern end of the Haut-Chantier and is from, for the most part, the 16th century. It was the first relay that travelers, going from Orléans to Tours, met in Indre-et-Loire. The position of postmaster was long occupied by the Peillerault family from father to son. Nevertheless, the last postmaster was Pierre Cullerre in 1785. A plaque with his name is still on the lintel door of the main house.

In 1938, Mr Pierre Paul bought all buildings. He restored them and turned them into a museum. In 1953, the museum of the old post office opened its doors. Many objects related to the post office, stagecoaches, saloon cars and post office chairs are collected there. It closed in 1971. A third of the objects was auctioned off, a third bequeathed to the town of Amboise and the last third given to the Musée de la Poste in Paris. The Amboise town council set up a museum of the Post Office in the Hôtel de Joyeuse (6 rue Joyeuse), which was finally closed in 2000 due to a lack of visitors.
